About Barbara

Barbara’s focus on well being and performance embraces more than just the physical body. This is evident in her humanitarian work with KIND CAUSES, PATAGONIA, and as the founder of OCCUPYHEART, PROJECT SWIMSUIT, EPIC HIMALAYA, THE BRILLIANCE GROUP, and A.I.R. (Acute Injury Recovery Therapy).

‘Performance’ to Barbara is success that generates from a passionate pursuit creating positive change, fulfillment, and inspiration. She celebrates those who champion their passion, whatever it may be: the completion of a monumental work project, a mountain bike marathon, a first time mile long swim, raising a happy and productive family, dedicating time on behalf of someone in need or a specific cause, etc.

Barbara encourages empowerment and excellence, teaching simple yet powerful principles to further purpose, tenacity, generosity, and results. Her well-known life blessing and her performance programs 9 to PODIUM and GAME F.A.C.E. touch a broad spectrum of people: executives, innovators, religious leaders, medical teams, elite athletes, coaches, professional sports teams, educational administrators, artists, scientists, explorers, etc. Their worlds turn with the empowering acronym: F.A.C.E.

F for Fun (or Focus)
A for Ambition
C for Consistency (or Creativity)
for Excellence

With a Masters degrees in Clinical Psychology and Eastern Philosophy, Barbara utilizes her academic, athletic, and life experience to help people the world over find success through inner and outer strength and solace. She places special importance on the benefits derived from exercise. She confesses that her time spent exercising – several hours everyday – is less about her triathlon career and more about aligning the body, mind, and spirit with far reaching professional and humanitarian aspirations.

Barbara works as performance consultant, sports psychologist, motivational speaker. She is the author of multiple books related to health and wellbeing, she develops running and wellness retreats at wellness centers worldwide, and leads global adventure challenges. She is an Ambassador for global companies such as Patagonia, Oakley, Specialized Bicycles, KIND Healthy Snacks, Lululemon, Salomon, Suunto, XTERRA Wetsuits, Doc on the Run, Bano Austria, and Rancho La Puerta.

As a 7-time world champion of the famous off-road triathlon XTERRA, Barbara continually demonstrates that being fit, ambitious, adventurous, kind, and happy is achievable and accessible for anyone. She lives in Berkeley, California, with her husband and two daughters.

Listen to Barbara’s interview with Kim Kircher as a hero of Action Sports on the Edge Radio.

Doc On The Run interviews Barbara about injury, recovery and what it takes to bounce back to championship status from a catastrophic injury.

Barbara’s blessing sums up her true spirit perfectly:

Seek wisdom from nature.
Live in truth.
Give more than you take.
Love deeply.
Say thank you.
Begin again.

Athlete

Being an athlete has been an important part of Barbara’s life and is a constant influence in everything she does. Her passion for outdoor sport, performance training, nutrition, and equipment, along with a love of people, language, and adventure travel is now the platform for her life work.

Barbara’s ethos is the basis of PROJECT BE MOVED:

“To move the world, we must first move ourselves.”

Barbara is dedicated to exploring how exercise can positively impact everyday life including when one is suffering from injury. She contends that moving and being moved is similar, it has the potential to effect positive change. From sports psychology to personal coaching to training for triathlons, she proves that mobility is important, and that being an athlete is accessible to anyone who desires it.

Barbara has dedicated her life to exploring how exercise positively impacts everyday life, including those suffering from injury. She contends that to move and be moved is powerful together or separate, with the potential to effect positive change, including healing for people of all ages. From sports psychology to coaching to training herself for endurance sport, she proves that mobility is critical to wellbeing. Being an athlete is also accessible to anyone who desires it.

Barbara shows that being a mother with a full career, a humanitarian activist, and 61 years old, doesn’t have to stand in anyone’s way. She believes that moving and being moved leads to abundance.

Barbara embodies her life work to the fullest – she lives and breathes her belief in the power of exercise and that excellence is derived from well-being in body, mind, and spirit. PROJECT BE MOVED originates from her expansive hope to inspire others to be a champion of personal passion, and life.

PROJECT BE MOVED is about moving ourselves in body, mind, and spirit so we can move the world to a more energized and positive place.
